But he wasn’t really sure about that. He didn’t know a ton about divorce. Sure, lots of kids in his class had divorced parents, and even his best friend, Jonathan, had his mom and dad split just this year. One thing he noticed was that at least you got two Christmases out of the deal. But all he wanted was his dad back. Who else was going to take him to the archery range? What about the Mets games and all the hotdogs his dad totally snuck him anyway? His dad was the only other guy in the house. Even Missy, their German shepherd, was a girl. He was going to be outnumbered.

Mom had to fix it.

She’d just ask Uncle Jack. Wasn’t that what lawyers were for and why even he knew they made buckets and buckets of money?

His mom frowned and pushed a few strands of red hair that had fallen in her face back out of her eyes. “Sweetheart, I can’t make your dad stay. He’s already got tickets to fly out. He already bought the tickets. There’s absolutely nothing I can do, but see if we can get some good financial arrangements out of the deal, like alimony and child support and basically adult things I shouldn’t even be listing off for you.”

He rolled his eyes. “Jonathan’s parents got divorced seven months ago. I know what alimony is cause the days his mom gets those checks she takes them to the movies as a fun trip.”

He frowned, and it started to hit him. His mom had stayed home with him and his little sister for their whole lives. She didn’t even have a job. That had always been on dad. Robert gasped for air, felt his chest tense up like it did if he didn’t always use his inhaler. Beside him, Kara started pulling on his shirtsleeve.

“Robbie? Are you okay?”

He nodded even if it was harder to speak. He’d been getting lots of therapy lately and his asthma was better. He just needed to calm down some. The last thing his mom needed was to worry more about him. “I’m fine. Mom, what about money? What are we going to do?”

“I’ll figure it out, honey. We’ll find a way to stay in New York so you can still see your friends at school. We’re going to have to move and we…anyway you don’t worry about that now. I’m going to take care of both of you, just like before, alright?”

Kara nodded and rubbed at her eyes. “Can I go back to sleep now, Mommy? My tummy feels rumbly, and I don’t want pancakes anyway.”

“Sure, maybe both of you need more sleep.” But his mom looked back at him when she spoke, her eyes heavy and sad.

Robert got it, and he wouldn’t have needed his mom to look at him to clue him in either. He was the man of the house now. He’d gotten this huge upgrade and now he was going to have to take care of and protect both his mom and his little sister.
